Our paper out @Nature: CARD domains mediate anti-phage defense in bacterial gasdermin systems

CARDs are essential for caspase recruitment during human inflammasome activation. We now find them in bacterial immune systems

Congrats Tana Wein! Thank you Kranzusch lab!

We found that many bacterial species use exogenous peptidoglycan fragments - released by lysis of neighboring cells - as a general danger signal, triggering a danger response that protects bacteria against many dangers: biofilm formation.

Bacteria use exogenous peptidoglycan as a danger signal to trigger biofilm formation - Nature Microbiology
Peptidoglycan released by neighbouring kin or non-kin cell lysis induces physiological changes that protect from a range of stresses, including phage predation.

Exciting times! Our latest preprint is now live 🤩!
After nearly 16 yrs of running my lab, I truly believe this is one of the most significant contributions we've made. It offers fresh hypotheses about how pandemic Vibrio cholerae spreads globally. Let’s dive in!🧵..1/n

Diverse phage defence systems define West African South American pandemic Vibrio cholerae
Our understanding of the factors underlying the evolutionary success of different lineages of pandemic Vibrio cholerae remains incomplete. Interestingly, two unique genetic signatures define the West ...
