Not many wax seals survive, but the some implements which created them, such as sealing rings and cone seals have survived.

The inscription reads:
Κ[ΥΡΙ]Ε ΒΟ[Η]Θ[ΕΙ]
ΤΟ Δ[ΟΥ]Λ[Ω] ΙΩ[ΑΝΝΗ]
Β[ΑΣΙΛΙΚΩ] ΣΠ[Α]Θ[ΑΡ]Ι[Ω]

Lord protect your servant John, the imperial spatharios.

This particular John was probably of a very wealthy family to afford such a ring which he would use to seal his documents with wax.

I am very impressed by the great work that is being done as we speak in Cologne and Paris in an effort to create a search engine for Byzantine sigillography. The @digibyzantine.bsky.social presentation was unbelievably impressive and interesting and I am very much looking forward to the updates!
