I ended up not registering for this conference because of the need to apply for a visa, the exorbitant registration fee (even as LMIC) & out-of-pocket expense that is not justifiable for conference participation. Conference organizers need to move away from Global North conference venues.

Conferences in the Global North with no hybrid options (in-person + online participation) are testament to the the inequality among researchers. When the visa hurdle is high, some may be rejected. Those who get to attend get more exposure and opportunities to network for future collaborations.2/2
