This inspiring interview shows how hope can be found even in the wake of devastating fires.

I love outdoor adventure in winter, things are much quieter and peaceful.

Winter is an amazing time to visit the Redwoods. Silent, moody, beautiful. Plus, tons of mushrooms and even some flowers!

Here are five wintery redwood hikes I recommend: www.savetheredwoods.org/blog/5-wonde...

NEWSLETTER REC: Sonia's Poems of the Week. This week, she shared Hirshfield's Autumn:

"Again the wind
flakes gold-leaf from the trees
and the painting darkens—
as if a thousand penitents
kissed an icon
till it thinned
back to bare wood,
without diminishment."

Wishing everyone a happy #WorldSoilDay!

My favorite soil fact is that, as long as it’s not submerged in water, any given soil is probably consuming methane from the atmosphere. Yup, even in the desert! Pictured: a Mojave field site where I’ve measured active microbial CH4 uptake from the air. 🌍🧪🦠

We saw a bobcat along the neighborhood trail this morning. We left it alone and it ran away from us, but it’s a great reminder that we share this wild place. 🐈

Here’s an article I wrote about bears in Reno - many were surprised to hear they also roam the area.

Wolves return to the Sierra Nevadas. A century ago there were thousands of wolves, all exterminated by settlers.

Until a decade ago there were no California wolves left.

Now nine active gray wolf families roam in the state.

READING REC:

The Mighty Red by Louise Erdrich

This book takes on themes of environment, community, fate, and desire all set within a small, North Dakotan town during the '08 market crash.

While overwhelmed with characters early on, it is a gripping, fast read that will stay with me.
