So I went ahead and used my actual high school photos... and as I shared elsewhere this evening - these photos unexpectedly helped to process grief I didn't know I had - the sorrow of not being able to be *her*. The yearning for the person who could have been.
Found my freshman pic if... So you might ask why even bother with these pictures?? Memories of the past hurt now. I can feel the dysphoria for what it was. These pictures give me a sense of self I previously just didn't have. They are mental pictures I can substitute into my memories so they don't trigger my negative self image and all the revulsion, fear, and anxiety that go with it. More importantly, they heal a gap in my sense of self - cleansing the sadness for the person I never got to be. Being able to see these pictures heals, illuminate the cavernous darkness that has been lurking - the girl I've always been but didn't know in a way that I could articulate at the time. Now I have a pretty good idea what the girl I was inside looked like, and for today, 30+ years later, it's enough. Apparently when the me that could have been was a sophomore, I decided to grow my hair out a little longer? In this life, in the summer between sophomore and junior year, I went from 4'11" and glasses to 5'6" and stopped wearing glasses pretty much for good. It... wasn't a good time for me. It was nice to physically not be so small, but I was so scared of the changes making me into something I didn't want to be, other than it helped me be more physically resilient. I think that summer for the me that could have been probably wasn't quite so drastic, and I probably wasn't nearly as scared of the mirror in my junior year Senior year I was just biding time, going through the motions. I'd already signed the Army paperwork because that was better than the "I don't know what your plan is after graduation, but you can't stay here. I'll give you $20 and a ride to the bus station," alternative I had been given. I think these pictures of the me that could have been capture that - but most of all I can see those dead, flat eyes and utter lack of smile that even the AI can't hide. It had nothing to learn from and build on. I have no illusions that my life would have been better. The bullying and violence would likely have been way worse. I probably wouldn't have joined cross-country and track and been able to compete. I probably wouldn't have been able to join the Army and escape. All things considered, I don't know if I would have survived. But I would have known who I was, and I'd like to think that would have been enough.

Four fictional characters to represent you.
Hikaru Shidou, my favorite character from Magic Knight Rayearth. Headstrong, passionate, determined, and a bit childish. Guilty as charged. Rachel Summers. I related to so many different X-men, but her "never again" attitude and determination are qualities I apply to my transition. Motoko Kusanagi, the protagonist of my psuedonymic Ghost in the Shell, is a consummate protector, investigator, and a ghost in the machine. Her ability to turn herself invisible is something I've wished for, but also seems to happen to me sometimes in groups. A genderbent version of Nightcrawler. Her irrepressible humor, creativity, and the perception she isn't taking things seriously, but still gets the job done are qualities I have that drive my more serious friends, coworkers, and family more than a little crazy.
