A friend of the family bought me a special edition Jack Daniels bottle for my birthday. Not what I'd normally drink, but having tried it I'd say you're right on that. It doesn't have the subtleties or depth of any of my single malt Scotch.

Water is one thing in small amounts but I'd argue ice changes the temperature which affects the flavour and your taste buds.
