Me reading this thread on rebuilding lichen in vitro.

I previously didn't question the claims of 'in lab lichen formation'.

I am vacationing on Tenerife these days. First days off after being #PhDone.

Walking to the lighthouse we passed some banana plantations.

Great chance to talk with my partner about the Cavendish and Fusarium.

Made me curious to look up more facts about banana cultivation. 🤓🍌🧪

What a joy to be in Wageningen 'City of Life Sciences'! 🧪 🦠

There should be more places like this.

And such a beautiful campus. Dense high-rise complexes and then lush fields.

Omw, to the last conference this year. Quick stop in Aachen and then onwards to Wageningen. Really looking forward to this first conference after defending my thesis. 🚝

Thank you!

I think this photo of the event is one of my favorites.

Everything worked out well!!

@lsi.bsky.social as we say in Germany: Legally I am for the moment not required to deny the title Dr. rer. nat. if someone is calling me so.

#PhDone

I also got these great shots with my PI:

'hey mela' is the first vegan pregnancy test in the world. Now available in Germany.

What could be vegan about it?

These tests are based on antibodies that are usually farmed from small rodents kept in cages, infected with hybridoma cells.

This test is based on AB expressed from algae!! 🧪

I finally picked up my "Epi-Bouquet 2" by @nickdesnoyer.bsky.social

As a former plant scienctist I am loving it! It's a great shirt! 💐 🧪

I visited my parents last weekend.
Took the day off early to catch an earlier train. At the mainstation I saw that the single train I need to take had an hour of delay. I went home again , showered , ate , back to the station. The train was still there.

3 h delay for a single train is my new PB.

Lilacs. At my old flat I had many in front of the big complex. I also love the smell! Snatched these in 2022. Happy birthday! 🎉🌻

Looks very extensive.

I never got why GoldenBraid limits next level assemblies to two preassembled units though.

Sure, you can loop, but M to P assembly or lvl1 to lvl2 to lvl1 just makes so much more sense to me.

If I want a four transcription unit vector, why do two assemblies for that??

Me laughing at a petri dish for a research institute report.
The PR person thought it was a great idea.

This year I got to peer review scientific articles for the first time.

I know that the peer review system is broken and needs to be rebuilt.

Still, I am massively proud to help other researchers to publish their work AND I also get to make sure their genetic resources are well annotated! 🧪🦠

I did my bachelor's and master's on heterologous gene expression in duckweed (Wolffia australiana).

Really hard to get stable lines that have the clonal tissue transformed.

Here you can see that the daughter plant's cells are not expressing gfp.

Feel free to ask me anything. 😅

Prof. Sang Yup Lee might save US democracy through microbial egg substitutes and they will be healthy! #eggs

Looking forward to what's to come.

@taeseokmoon.bsky.social held a very broad presentation at #ME16

All the best to your Moonshot!

Also looking forward to all the future tools to come.

Like proper antibiotic resistance marker free plasmids.

Love this image. Have it at my flat for 5 years now.

This is not the first photo taken by Hubble of the nebula though.

We have our long night of science tomorrow in Magdeburg.

Many research institutes are open to the public and there will be plenty of entertainment.

I made some agar art (mostly the MPG Minerva and the local sport clubs' logos).

Blue and Purple are from chromoproteins so no fluorescence there. 🌈

Just finished 'everything is tuberculosis' by John Green.

I really appreciate its portrayal of societal stigmatization and how the pursuit of easy answers can impede our understanding and response to disease.

People look for reasons that they are not affected while others are.

Recommended. 🦠 🧪

I just started a fresh black tea kombucha culture before leaving for a seven days vacation!

I am very curious about how it will have developed in my absence. 🦠

Looking forward to tardiness.

I just came back from my Greece vacation and tested through the ice cream sortiment of Kri-Kri.

Had a blast!

Also marketing was omnipresent.

My highlight were the tiny icecreams you could buy in each backery per kg. Taste amazing!

Took this one yesterday before going to the Orthodox Church in Kalamata (Greece).

So many things are blooming here already that still need time in Germany. The Robinias/Acacias are also already in full bloom here.
