Are you sure this is an article worth writing and sharing? First of all, Wein was not a "dev". He was "head of communication" and thus very likely very far removed from the dev teams and probably the decision making. Second, did you reach out to the devs who worked on the game? No, right?

Nordic Game is smaller, but I enjoyed the overall positive vibes. Yes, game dev is struggling, but things are happening. Malmö is just one game dev hub in Sweden. There are a lot of young and passionate devs in big and small studios. Looking forward to more conferences in the future. 2/2

I wonder how many of the devs that worked on those 72 titles still have a job.

Damn. Fingers crossed it gets better.

That sucks. Any chance getting a new job you don't hate?

I personally don't need them baked in, but I appreciate good subtitles I can enable. But I rarely do on YT anyway.

The „weird“ nerds some of those people made fun of in school are now making „their“ games and we make them how we want it. Go and learn arts and programming and audio and writing and then do it yourself - be my guest.

Ah, sorry. Don't be sad then - you just assume it will be fall and that's just not clear. At least, we now know it's 2025. Be excited about it. :D

I kind of get it, but Nintendo is not responsible for the leaks and that you looked at them. They planned their PR campaign and produced their material long ago for people that don’t follow those „news“. Don’t be mad at Nintendo, is what I‘m saying. 😄

As a gamer, I agree. As a dev, I unfortunately know how hard it still is to prioritize for a lot of those features. If the timeline is tight and everyone is running on fumes already, we‘ll of course postpone e.g. the photo mode until later. The game and dev health comes first.

Take some rest, dude. 😊

As a producer, I totally agree. And everyone knows it as well - even the publishers. But we rather lie to them/ourselves and possibly burn out trying to stick to a timeline made up 3+ years ago. I was gonna write a similar thread about it, too.

Just to clarify: building demos with UE is all good, can give you great insights or just be fun. It's just not the same as building a game with all its interconnecting systems, gameplay features, physics, animations, audio etc. and then releasing on 4+ platforms/stores.

The vault goes back to the year 1996 and even includes past offsprings of the GDC, like the ones in Europe or China. Since it's from devs for devs, the talks can be very specific, but that's better than someone building a demo level - w/ megascans, w/o gameplay - in UE5 and calling devs lazy. 3/3

A (great) example and is "The Art of Closing" by @flaoua.bsky.social - while the video is only for paying members, you can find the slides here anyway: www.gdcvault.com/play/1028874..., .
Btw. I had the pleasure to see the talk live at GDC'23 and the slides represent the talk well. 2/3
Production Essentials Summit: The Art of Closing
Closing is, at the same time, the most critical and least glamorous phase of game development. It heavily impacts the final quality of the game and the overall health of the team. Bad closing is a mom...

...actually working on a game is still totally different and can't be distilled into a single video, podcast or article. It's different from project to project, team to team and studio to studio. I can only recommend all 33 episodes of Double Fine's PsychOdyssey to get a glimpse into it. 3/3

This way - and that's just my guess - there would generally be a bigger appreciation of and less weird assumptions about game devs. And it's not that people can't learn more about game dev, as there is plenty good material online, like GDC talks, podcasts, interviews etc. But... 2/3
