If we want to talk about depiction of history/culture/events etc in board games, we must address the biggest source of distortion: player assumptions and bias.

Alternatively, we could read criticism of depictions as an extension of current discourses and biases beyond the game itself. (3/3)

Depicting for example history in a board game adds distortion through the main characteristic of the medium itself: player participation.

History depicted in a game is mechanically structured by the designer, yes, but narratively reconstructed by its players: a major source of distortion. (2/3)

I think it's uncontroversial to say that "board game collector" is a post-hoc rationalisation for continued overspending.

To be clear, I've been just as susceptible to all those influences. It's still worth saying these things out loud.

Yeah, the tutorials are really slow and you run out of patience by the time you get to the end of them.

I generally recommend to pick one of the middle ones, and then skip straight into the first box.

It takes quite a while to get going. And while that long on-ramp is great for groups who haven't touched a boardgame in years. It's a little tedious when you're familiar with it.
