yeah I think people and their taxonomic views of folklore get warped by the idea of 'a black shuck', but the phenomena is the same just with a modern secular rationality applied, and also incredibly common and widespread and diverse, it's spooky on moors in the dark!

not to suggest that the chase is actually haunted or anything, all places like this have the same stories told about them, they're remote and easy to get lost and confused in.

Cannock Chase is notorious for its modern folklore, a lot of which has been hyped up by grifters, but wild man and British big cat stories are common. I've always see big cat stories as a modern version of black dog phenomena, and if you look you will find accounts stretching back over 100 years

a spirt or demon, as in black shuck or shagfoal or shug monkey, there's no barrow there now but they have to keep pruning the yew to stop it spreading further, I've not been inside it since I was 11 years old
