I'm a bit of a pencil freak. I've got a great collection: Blackwings, Mitsubishis, Staedtlers, etc. But my favourites come from this $1.99 Dollarama sketching kit. If only they knew what they had (and what I would pay)!

To be fair, the Microsoft antitrust suit taught us all that tech cos need to protect their apps by descending the tech stack with proprietary solutions e.g., Google rolls out Chrome, Android, and ChromeOS, at least in part to prevent Microsoft from cutting it off at the knees... or the browser/OS.

Commodities can always find a buyer; they can't always find the desired (or necessary) price. Containers of unshipped beans make for great headlines, but it's the 10% haircut in the price of sold commodities that bankrupts farmers. 😞

I read it as a kid. For some reason, my brain set "Altered Carbon" in the same universe, so I went back to it. My rereading was very different. Bigoted ideas, yes, but I was surprised at just wooden the writing is!

My grandfather died young. My dad would get rides from a family friend, an entomologist. On long drives, dad would climb trees to get tent caterpillar nests for him. Dad: "Dr. Atwood was a great man." Me: "Margaret Atwood's father?!?" Dad: "Peggy? I hear she's an author or something now..."

I feel like there's a failure in price discovery here. If Foreignlandia is a global exporter of chips, computers, and potash, wouldn't it now be wise to apply export taxes? Particularly after its partner defected?
