SiriusXM has a station called "Dad Rock." Not surprisingly, it plays dad rock, mixed in with dad jokes. The concept is a bit saccharine... but it's the compromise choice for my kids and me on long car trips!

And also Desk Set. Because Katherine Hepburn. And libraries. And early computers. And debauched office parties.

The best zombie Christmas high school musical of all time! [I'm not sure I had those adjectives in the right order...]

Elaine Svenonious called this phenomenon "guided by the invisible hand of the classification system" -- getting you close so serendipity can occur. Dopamine hit engaged. Instantly getting exactly what (the system thinks) I want just isn't the same. Endowment effect, maybe.

It's a tube with an HB, 2B, and a charcoal sketching pencil. That HB is, to me, perfect. Good luck finding it!

I'm a bit of a pencil freak. I've got a great collection: Blackwings, Mitsubishis, Staedtlers, etc. But my favourites come from this $1.99 Dollarama sketching kit. If only they knew what they had (and what I would pay)!

To be fair, the Microsoft antitrust suit taught us all that tech cos need to protect their apps by descending the tech stack with proprietary solutions e.g., Google rolls out Chrome, Android, and ChromeOS, at least in part to prevent Microsoft from cutting it off at the knees... or the browser/OS.

Commodities can always find a buyer; they can't always find the desired (or necessary) price. Containers of unshipped beans make for great headlines, but it's the 10% haircut in the price of sold commodities that bankrupts farmers. 😞

I read it as a kid. For some reason, my brain set "Altered Carbon" in the same universe, so I went back to it. My rereading was very different. Bigoted ideas, yes, but I was surprised at just wooden the writing is!

You know? I think I'm okay with flag jacking provided people behave as stereotypical Canadians! For the record, lots of us are assholes despite the flags on our packs...

Heh. My kids only know "South of me" as the song you play heading west from Calgary on the Trans Canada on a brilliant March day, promise of spring -- and skiing -- in the air...

They were great! And you apparently wrote them just for me. Thank you!

Was... was "V for Vendetta" a how-to guide? That wasn't my reading of it.

I'm not an American. My kids recently asked if America sucks now, and I had to say, "well... it's complicated." But I also told them that *Americans* are still among the most generous and friendliest people on Earth. Mostly. We're not giving up on y'all.

My grandfather died young. My dad would get rides from a family friend, an entomologist. On long drives, dad would climb trees to get tent caterpillar nests for him. Dad: "Dr. Atwood was a great man." Me: "Margaret Atwood's father?!?" Dad: "Peggy? I hear she's an author or something now..."

Top Gear ruined this joke for me -- my brain immediately goes to "chicken coupes" and "chicken saloon cars"...

Nice! Although the packaging seems a bit naked without French (not to mention that odd spelling of "flavoured"). Enjoy.

I feel like there's a failure in price discovery here. If Foreignlandia is a global exporter of chips, computers, and potash, wouldn't it now be wise to apply export taxes? Particularly after its partner defected?
