Here to talk about all things Tolkien, media literacy, comedy, and the weirdly high number of movie remakes from the mid to late 90s that outshine the originals.

Anti-racist, feminist, pro-queer joy
(So, anti-Trump, obviously)

I swear to God, Septuagenarians constantly trying to replicate the success of the 1992 election is gonna be the thing that prevents any sort of organized defense of the American institution.

One thing missing from especially #tolkien adaptation conversations is the fact that bad adaptation ≠ equal bad movie. My favorite example of this is The Count of Monte Cristo (2002).
The chief message of the novel is that revenge is bad, but the movie is a perfect revenge fantasy popcorn movie.

I love this line in #LordoftheRings movies because it’s just a nice little nod to Tolkien’s absolute obsession with the archaic definition of “doom” (as simply a synonym for fate, without inherent negativity)

I hate it here.

Just saw this fake quote online and if you’re not familiar with C.S. Lewis, this is the equivalent of posting a pic of #Tolkien with the caption “‘I hate trees, they suck.’ -JRR Tolkien” or
“‘Your mother isn’t really that important. -Freud”

Dude LOVED to describe what he thought life was.

In #thehobbit movies, during the showdown at Dol Guldur, Galadriel says to Sauron, “you have no name, servant of Morgoth.” A cool line which is 1000% cooler after watching Rings of Power.

It’s probably because it’s new, but the “likes to dopamine” ratio is way better over here than on #tolkienthreads
One like feels like twenty! I’m like “wow, three likes! That post is taking off!”
I’m still riding high from the post I made on Wednesday that got EIGHT likes.

A fun bit of depth Rings of Power adds to #lordoftherings by establishing this relationship the way it does:
In Return of the King, the first thing Gandalf does once he gets the Hobbits to Bree after the fall of Sauron is go have a “long conversation” with Tom Bombadil now that his task is done.

One of my favorite moments in the #LordOfTheRings books is that, after hundreds of pages of writing Sauron as a looming, unseen force (and being very stingy with non-hobbit POV moments in general), Tolkien goes out of his way to make sure we know that Sauron died* feeling foolish and afraid.
