Bacalar Chico National Park and Marine Reserve (est. 1996) in northern Belize was created to prevent a US-development company from destroying the biome. The reef lies within The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System; the planet's second longest barrier reef. It is an essential area for sea turtle nests.

In 2010, British lawyer Polly Higgins (1968-2019) requested the UN-Law Commission recognise ecocide as an international crime, but it refused. She said 'Ecocide leads to resource depletion: where there is escalation of resource depletion, war comes. Ecocide can be regarded as a crime against peace.'

Wadden Sea National Park (est. 2010) in western Denmark protects marine & terrestrial life; a resting place for millions of migratory birds in marshlands. It has more than 500 species of flora & fauna. There are tidal channels, tidal flats, stream mouths, beach meadows, sand plains & dunes.

Mols Bjerge National Park (est. 2009) in eastern Denmark has heath & forest areas that protect more than 50% of the indigenous, wild flora species of the region with remnants of an ancient forest. The coastal zone has kelp forests that sustain an array of marine life. Fauna & fungi are diverse.

Inspired by Andrée de Jongh (1916-2007): a member of the Belgian Resistance during World War II. She was caught by the Gestapo and spent two years in a concentration camp. She survived, but with ruined health. After the war, she worked in leprosy centres in Africa, as a nurse.
