We develop fundamentals for climate change adaptation.
What previously required a full day on the glacier can now be covered in 20 minutes thanks to advanced #UAV technology. As Anna puts it: “You can already speak of a small revolution.”

📡 Autonomous UAS operations for climate impact research in high alpine regions

This autumn, GEORESEARCH received official BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) approval from Austro Control for operating unmanned aerial systems (UAS) from hangar-based systems in two high alpine regions.

We are proud to contribute this knowledge to future initiatives, building on the legacy of projects like #SedAlp.

Huge thanks to Hohe Tauern National Park for the long-standing collaboration in the Obersulzbachtal!

and thawing of isolated permafrost bodies (evidenced by “light” isotopic signatures in meltwater — a trace of older, colder climate conditions). High-resolution, long-term #monitoring like this is essential to understand sediment mobilization, validate debris-flow models,

High-alpine cirques like the Sattelkar are major sediment reservoirs due to their concave, deposition-friendly morphology. Across the #Alps, we’re observing increasing #sediment export from such environments — driven by more intense summer rainfall, #permafrost degradation, and #glacier retreat.
October 29, 2025 at 7:54 AM
Last Thursday – just a few hours before a cold front brought 20 cm of fresh snow – our team climbed into the remote, hard-to-access #Sattelkar cirque (Obersulzbachtal, Hohe Tauern National Park) to collect water-isotope samples and retrieve ground-temperature sensor data.

🎥 Missed the live premiere of ''Brüchige Berge" on ORF1?

No worries — we’ve prepared the highlights from the latest Dok 1 documentary featuring our research at the iconic #Großglockner! 🏔️

GEORESEARCH featured in new "Dok 1" documentary on ORF

Tune in on Wednesday, 15 October at 20:15 for the latest #Dok1 episode featuring our research at Austria’s highest peak, the #Großglockner. This extraordinary site is one of our key study areas within the #Interreg project #FROST.INI.

How much ice is left in one of Salzburg's largest glaciers? 🧊

Last week, our team conducted fieldwork at Venedigerkees — one of the largest glaciers in Salzburg — to obtain high-resolution surface models and to measure its ice thickness.
