📡 Autonomous UAS operations for climate impact research in high alpine regions

This autumn, GEORESEARCH received official BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) approval from Austro Control for operating unmanned aerial systems (UAS) from hangar-based systems in two high alpine regions.

Last Thursday – just a few hours before a cold front brought 20 cm of fresh snow – our team climbed into the remote, hard-to-access #Sattelkar cirque (Obersulzbachtal, Hohe Tauern National Park) to collect water-isotope samples and retrieve ground-temperature sensor data.

How much ice is left in one of Salzburg's largest glaciers? 🧊

Last week, our team conducted fieldwork at Venedigerkees — one of the largest glaciers in Salzburg — to obtain high-resolution surface models and to measure its ice thickness.

Today's #fieldwork day consisted of geodetic mass balance #monitoring of Stubacher Sonnblickkees in the morning, and UAV-borne #LiDAR scans of the recently deglaciated #rockwalls of #Ödenwinkel in the afternoon.

Another day of #glacier monitoring is in the books: #ice thickness measurements with UAV-borne #GPR at Ödenwinkelkees (Hohe Tauern). Heavy packs, but stunning landscapes and interesting data - that's how we like it 🤩

Supporting the #G-MONARCH project this week with GPR, LiDAR, and echosounder measurements — all UAV-based, of course.

Permafrost Drilling at #Großglockner - Mission Accomplished! 🗻 ✅

Last week, we successfully drilled two brand-new deep #permafrost boreholes just north and south of the Erzherzog-Johann-Hütte (aka Eagle’s Rest) – Austria’s highest mountain hut at 3,454 m asl.
