Check out this beautifully preserved filamentous fossil that is about 1.5 billion years old from Australia. The blob at the left end is a holdfast. This filament normally has branches and is enclosed in a larger vesicle. #FossilFriday #Geology #Paleontology

#FossilFriday a 1.5 Ga fossil filaments preserved in 3D, exposed on an etched bedding plane. These are from a secret location and there are masses of these things in this sample. They were internally silicified after being entombed in clay. Deets in the alt text. #Geology #Paleontology #Fossil

Happy #FossilFriday please enjoy this 3.2 billion year old #acritarch from South Africa. Still no idea where these things sit taxonomically but they sure are pretty. The black fluffy stuff is microbial mat, the crystal is maybe xenotime? #Geology #Paleontology
