Check out this beautifully preserved filamentous fossil that is about 1.5 billion years old from Australia. The blob at the left end is a holdfast. This filament normally has branches and is enclosed in a larger vesicle. #FossilFriday #Geology #Paleontology

@nhmbryozoa.bsky.social saw these Fenestrate #bryozoa (?) In #Devonian limestone from Belgium. They have these feathery extensions, like in the 2nd pic. Have you seen anything like this previously? #geology #paleontology ⚒️ 🧪

Late #FossilFriday this tiny bebe frond on a siltstone bedding plane from an undisclosed UK location of suspected #Ediacaran age. Lots of interesting frond-like structures on these samples. #Geology #Paleontology ⚒️ 🧪

Extreme close up of a 1.5 billion year old micro #fossil. The tiny perforations are a structural feature where the plates that make the outer surface link together. #geology #paleontology

#FossilFriday a 1.5 Ga fossil filaments preserved in 3D, exposed on an etched bedding plane. These are from a secret location and there are masses of these things in this sample. They were internally silicified after being entombed in clay. Deets in the alt text. #Geology #Paleontology #Fossil

Happy #FossilFriday please enjoy this 3.2 billion year old #acritarch from South Africa. Still no idea where these things sit taxonomically but they sure are pretty. The black fluffy stuff is microbial mat, the crystal is maybe xenotime? #Geology #Paleontology

#ThinSectionThursday a 3.2 billon year old microbial mat in a sandstone deposited on a beach. Spot the #zircon #geology #paleontology

The structure and detail in these Archean microbial mats from South Africa are fantastic. I could look at these all day. Deets in the alt text. #Geology #Paleontology

A 1.4 Ga iron oncoid made of berthierine and greenalite. The black dot is a micro #fossil. The black lines are branching filamentous fossils. All preserved in the ooid. #Geology #Paleontology #FossilFriday

Oxidised (left) and unoxidised 3.2 billion year old banded iron formation. These samples are from drill core and were only a couple of meters apart. #geology #paleontology

Another 3.2 billon year old mat section, this time less weathered and wetted to make the mats more visible. #geology #Paleontology

3.2 billion year old microbial mats on one of Earth's first beaches. The dark wrinkles are the mats. This has been weathered, so the mat is easy to see. #geology #paleontology

There has been a fire alarm at the hotel and we've had to evacuate. I was in the shower though. 😅

I can't talk about that yet though. So for now I'll just look forward to when I can share all these beautiful #fossils with the rest of you.

Thanks for all the spoons. In return please enjoy the tiny fossil below, it's from my talk, deets in the alt text. Talks still not done and it's looking like crap. But it's more finished that it was.
