When limes are 30 cents each, I feel okay about using half a lime for garnish in my Mai Tai

Except it’ll go in the fridge and I’ll use it tomorrow.
A short glass tumbler is 80% full with an amber liquid and ice cubes. Half a lime has been turned into an old style sailing ship with sails made of lime peel, attached with toothpicks. The sailing lime ship is floating on top, precariously perched on ice cubes.

Oh it is! It’s the Snowflake, and I found it on the side of the road in original packaging. Couldn’t beat the price.

This has been in my fridge for over a week. Two heads of lettuce in one dirt pod. I am working through one for sandwiches still.

Less than $100 💪
Plants I bought: two ferns, two lavender, a hosta, and 6 assorted sedums and succulents. They are sitting on my cement balcony, inside a wooden planter, but still in their plastic tubs.

Emergency doggo!

Maple loves her ball. She is happy laying on the cool floor next to her ball. She’ll doze off a bit, and then startle awake, paw at the ball and play with it a bit, and then doze back off asleep again.

Maple loves ball more than cookies, that’s saying a lot.

Carrot greens!

She did eat a few, and she’s kind of playing with them.

Maple the golden retriever sniffs a short lowball glass holding a Mai Tai -a classic tiki cocktail of a mix of rums, lime juice, orgeat (almond liqueur), triple sec (orange liqueur). The drink is a pale yellow, with half of a spent lime floating upside like an island, and a hefty sprig of mint, pretending to be a palm tree on lime island.

I think every single Burnaby Garbage truck is here. They e blocked off every road with either concrete blocks or diagonal trucks. They’ve ALSO blocked off every residential parking garage with a garbage truck.
A white garbage truck is parked diagonally across the entrance to a parking garage of a three-level apartment building, to prevent vehicles from entering the pedestrian street festival. A food truck is parked in front of the apartment building.

Burnaby Streetfest officially starts at 6:30 but they’ve been setting up for days. People are already staking out seating for the fireworks at 10:15.
A vibrant U-shaped inflatable archway has been erected across Central at Willingdon Streets. Three huge cement bricks are painted in matching vibrant colours to prevent vehicles from entering the street festival. An earthquake simulator sits on a small trailer. It’s an enclosed room with a door, built on a special trailer that allows people to go in the room, and the room shakes, allowing people to experience the ground motion of an earthquake. Brightly coloured food trucks line a residential street of drab concrete multi-level apartment buildings. Food trucks include Tacosaurus, The Jerk Shack, Green Coffee, Tokyo Katsu-Sand. The road is closed to vehicles, and pedestrians walk down the road.

Opened QGIS and sketched out the area (in black below). That included a lot of building space, so I just cut out the street areas (second image, in red). It has a tool that will just magically* calculate the area of a polygon for you.

Great news, I love questions like this. I looked up the "unlawful assembly area" and found a post on X from the po-po, and also took a look at the traffic on google maps for the area.

A butterfly for the butterfly app! Western tiger swallowtail, I think.

This is wild. It took me a while to see it, so I annotated a screenshot of the fault surface. Video description in alt text of image attached.

During the video, the ground starts shaking, and then as the shaking slows, the ground on the right side of the fence lurches toward the camera. I drew a blue line along the fault to help people know what to look for in the video.

Many many years later, on a camping trip, in Souris, Manitoba, they met one of the pilots who dropped food on Oma’s town. It’s a small world.
“Now I get to tell you one more little story. Last year we were camping in Souris, Manitoba. We were invited to join the campfire of the people next to us. We started to tell stories. I told him my ‘Mr. Christie you have good cookies’ story. Mr. McLean got tears in his eyes and told me it was the first time he met anybody who had benefitted from his work. He was one of the pilots who dropped the food on that little airfield near my hometown. I got up and went to him. I gave him a big hug and said, "Over 50 years late, but thank you, Mr. McLean". And I too had a good cry.” Below is a black-and-white photo of Oma and Opa, not sure what year it’s from. She wears a floral dress with fabric covered buttons down the front. Opa is wearing a dark suit, and has his arm around Oma’s waist. They are smiling at the camera, and standing in front of some shrubbery.

One of my cousins took Oma’s story and bound it into a book, and included some photos. This is her memory of Liberation Day:

It reads: “Slowly with the help of the Red Cross, things got a bit better. And with spring arriving, the fighting started up again on the east side of the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg, that way into Germany. On the 4th of May, the Germans laid down their arms. 8 o'clock was curfew. We were sent off to bed and we were hanging out of our bedroom windows talking to our friends across the road. A neighbour came walking down the road in the full-dress uniform of a captain of the Dutch army. Wow, he was a sight to see. He told us "You can come out now. The war is over". We got dressed and ran downstairs out into the street. People came pouring in the streets. Music instruments came out of their hiding places. On the corner of one street, a bonfire was made. I still wonder where the wood came from. People seemed drunk with happiness. Music was played, and people were singing and dancing in the streets. I cannot remember what time I came home; it was very late or maybe early in the morning. I was wearing my potato bag slippers. They were worn out to the skin of my feet. The next day May 5th, in Wageningen, the official papers were signed. The war was over. Soon the Canadian Army came to our town. People were just nuts, me too. The tanks were decorated with flags and flowers. One of the Canadians gave me a little chocolate bar. Those little ones with 6 squares. I took it home and shared it with everyone, each got 1 square.
