Shadowy conifers in front of an interesting sky. Last few drops of dioxazine purple, along with rubine red and cadmium crimson. Stenciled trees in acrylic paints. Gouache stars. Cotton watercolor paper. Turned out weird but I love it. This was fun, and now I will return to my comfort zone of watercolors for a little while. 😌

An abstract intuitive tribute to the three spruce trees we lost in the Blizzard of 2022. They were nearly a century old. Many people lost far more. And this is not a complaint. But, I miss them.

Meditative, fun, and therapeutic to do.

A mixed media piece on 10" x 15" cotton watercolor paper. Landscape orientation. When the purple ink spilled all over my creative space a week ago, I took a deep breath, stayed calm, salvaged a few drops, got some water onto the paper, and had a messy play. With some help from white gouache stars, and my stencil collection. Created from November 13 - 21, 2025, as the idea gradually revealed itself, and as I had time.

Could have made my point much less vulnerably and cringe! It's a good tool for toothpaste, and every household should have at least one (maybe but I would never tell you what to do). That "ooh! a SPARKLY!" up there was a gift, but there are smaller, cheaper versions. Search "tube key tool."

A tube wringer (or key) for getting every last drop of paint!

A tube wringer for never wasting the chin cream, that makes me more acceptable, to people who don’t really see me, that washes down the drain, and leaves my hands too slippery, to hold a ceramic salad bowl.

We had clouds, so I tried to paint the aurora for myself. Pulled out the (uh oh) acrylic inks and made sky after sky. Fun! When it was time to paint the trees or buildings I accidentally spilled a full bottle of dioxazine purple all over my space 🤣 I do struggle with “realism”…

A square format, simple abstract watercolor sketch in a cotton sketchbook, that attempts (but fails) to do justice to the actual prompt, but somehow keeps trying because it creates more consciousness, and time. Maybe. Where can we go for breaks from the sounds and screens that we also somehow depend on? Sometimes, painting. Lifting through tree shaped stencils. Lines removed, not painted on. Winter palette: French ultramarine, cascade green, and lunar black. White gouache splatters.

Yesterday, I made (the most wonderful!) chili. Yes, because it was very cold out (doh!)

And because mom requested it.

She *enjoyed* it!

So did we.

A photo of some of my mise en place for chili. I have a few great chili recipes, but this one is the house favorite. A very “Frank’s” heavy chili con carne, based on Drew Magary’s (MOM’S!) recipe. These days, I only make it upon request. Yesterday was the right moment for it. Served with tortilla chips, chopped scallions, and shredded cheese. Tonight, salad! It reduced about a third of the way down the pan. Chili is a very forgiving thing to make, and we often already have most of the ingredients in our pantries. It can be as mild or hot as you like, and as vegetarian or carnivorous. For me it’s very warming and healing. But it’s best when shared with someone who appreciates its unique charms wait am I still talking about ch
