Maybe I'm overly pessimistic about consensus around genuine reform, but it seems to me that it will take a massive shift to get either accomplished. I don't disagree that we should be looking to alleviate suffering as quickly as possible, though.

I go straight there because effective prison reform can't happen in a vacuum. We need housing, education and healthcare reform to prevent criminogenic conditions in the first place. Jumping straight to abolition means the resources we spend on prisons can be spent on these more effective issues.

I was homschooled until the 3rd grade, and I think I'm still a little socially stunted from it. My mom actually did a pretty good job of teaching me the academic stuff, but there was no one making sure she did. It really needs more oversight at a minumum.
