Before us rises a small palace of pale stone that seems to gleam in the morning sun. Two guards stand out front in full armor, facing forward with fine tabards embroidered with the crest of a rampant lion. As I step past them, my amulet jumps against my skin. Those aren’t real guards—they’re an illusion. Nymon’s a smart monster. He likes to hide in plain sight. Currently, he’s taken on the guise of a Duke of the city—even though he keeps his manor on Flesh Peddler’s Lane. But what better place for an incubus to call home? I can’t think of one. Smirking, I open the large oak door—which is, of course, unlocked. There’s no doubt in my mind that the moment I stepped through that outer gate, Nymon knew I’d arrived. He has that way about him. He always seems to know what I’m doing. Always seems to show up just when I need him. I suppose that’s what friends are for. Maybe I actually have two friends.

When castles crumble beneath your treacherous feet, when you drown in the blood of deceit, I’ll laugh bitterly—and still, I’ll love you. When your whispered sweetness melts into venomous sighs, I’ll haunt your traitor's bed, and whisper cold goodbyes. When he leaves you hollow, abandoned, alone, when your faithless heart splits and turns to stone, Know it was your hand that drove this knife home— Yet damned as I am, I’ll still love you. In ruin, betrayal, and sorrow, you'll weep, haunted by vows you promised to keep. But vengeance is sweet, and as shadows ensue— I’ll savor your pain, yet still love you too. So sleep not easy, traitor of mine, taste bitter ashes in your stolen wine. For though rage consumes me, fierce and true— Cruel love won't fade: I’ll still love you.

I’m struck by the strangest sensation. As though I’ve been here before. As though I’ve stood in this exact same spot—though I have no recollection of it. The familiarity presses against my chest like the memory of a nightmare I can’t quite grasp. Scratch. Scratch. Scratch. Someone fiddles with something, drawing my attention to the source of that noise. Vrythien. I take a half step back. My breath catches. His face is blank, but he’s standing wrong—his posture slightly stooped, nothing like the high tilt his chin normally holds. “Are you all right?” My brows knit as the words leave me softer than I intend, concern threading through every syllable. He sneers at me. “Why wouldn’t I be? It’s just an inn in some backwoods nowhere.” He huffs and that chin tilts back up again. “Seriously, what sort of pointless question is that? Clearly, you lost your sense with all your memories as well,” he murmurs the last part, and those eyes of his are dead—like a doll’s. Vacant of any shade of feeling as he stares forward, as though he’s watching something beyond me and I’m not there at all. The hollowness in his voice punches straight through my chest. The sign clatters in the crisp wind as Geraent and Faeriel stride into the doors side by side, ignoring my exchange with Vrythien entirely. In all truth, I half wish I could do the same.

He gives a bitter laugh, scrubbing a hand over his face. “Truth is, I didn’t know where to begin. All we had was fucking—gods, and it was good—but I wanted more. Wanted you. And I didn’t know how to ask for that without sounding like a damned fool.” He glances away, his gaze fixed on something distant, unreachable. “Didn’t know if I could ask. Didn’t know if you’d even want it.” He sucks his teeth, a sound of frustration and shame. “Funny, isn’t it? I’ve seen centuries pass, led rebels into war, slit more throats than I can count... and yet this—you—makes me feel like a green-blooded child again.” A pause, then softer—bitterly so. “So I did what I always do. I ruined it. Because if there’s one thing I’ve mastered, it’s destroying the only good fucking things I ever touch.” He sighs and plucks the petals with deft, quick motions, careful not to bruise them. "We're close in different ways, Ravaen," I say as we move around the plant together, harvesting those rare royal blue petals. "I doubt I could go herbing with Valaen and trust him to participate." I smirk and take the petals from Ravaen, wrapping them in linen. "And we understand each other in a way I don't think he ever could." I smile weakly and sigh. "We're somehow completely opposite and exactly the same." I set my teeth into my bottom lip, and shake my head. "I like that about us." He makes a soft, sad noise. "Us. Though I imagine there is no more us."

In my current WIP most magic has been broken. No more sorcerers no more wizards no more druids. A Wizard got too greedy and broke the current that made the major magics. But lesser magics linger in unexpected ways.

You’d lay your heart bare without fear, and I…” He exhales sharply, like the thought alone hurts. “I’d know how to do the same.” He takes my hands in his—calloused, careful. Holds them like they might vanish if he grips too hard. “That elf could’ve loved you.” A bitter flicker crosses his face. “I can’t. I don’t know how anymore.”
