Last week's read, which I bought purely for the title, was MURDER YOUR EMPLOYER by Rupert Holmes - the 1950s-set story of three students at a secret university for would-be killers with a just cause. A touch overlong, but clever, darkly satisying and wickedly funny.

A MONTH IN THE COUNTRY by J L Carr. Elegiac, quietly beautiful, with so many worthwhile things to say about grief, time, recovery and savouring small moments of happiness. Not my usual thing, but this one really won me over.

THE TEST by Sylvain Neuvel. Black Mirror-esque story of a UK citizenship test that takes a frightening turn. A gripping study of ethics, how we treat those without power, and the nebulous concept of 'British Values'.

COMFORT ME WITH APPLES by Catherynne M Valente. The big reveal in this tale of a young wife unearthing the rot at the heart of her seemingly perfect world was pretty obvious, but Valente's writing is rich and gorgeous as ever.
