In August 1914, the German army deliberately burned the University Hall, which then housed the university library, destroying over 230,000 books and manuscripts. Rebuilt after WWI, it now houses the Rector's office, hosts PhD defences, and is where new students enroll.

Today, the City of Leuven ceremonially transferred Leuven's University Hall to KU Leuven to commemorate the 600th anniversary of the founding of the old University of Leuven in 1425.

The oldest part of the building was originally constructed as the city’s cloth hall in 1317.
