Ame Caline/Soul Coaxing just came on the radio. Reminds me of a time when all I cared about was watching Batman and reading Beano. The world is such a different place now.

The Mail not giving its (admittedly stupid) readers the full picture? Goodness me!
Wow. Imagine the shock for the Daily Mail when it finds out Tory plans were for fines of £5k - later reduced to £3k - for each missed heat pump sale. What Ed Miliband has done is to reduce that to £500. As @torstenbell.bsky.social says today Headline should read “Miliband slashes Tory boiler tax”

Day eight - The Lives of Others (2006) early 80s pre collapse of wall, Berlin. A playwright is under surveillance from the Stasi for reasons which are not immediately obvious. After an article puts him in danger an unlikely source saves the day. The last four words of script are so beautifully apt.

Day seven - American Graffiti 1973- it’s 1962 and the last night before a bunch of young friends head off to college and adulthood. The whole drama unfolds to the backdrop of perhaps the greatest movie soundtrack of all time. Look out for a young Harrison Ford in a supporting role

Day six - Life is Beautiful (1997) - Italy, 1944. Italian Jews are sent to a concentration camp, including Guido, his wife Dora and four year old son, Giosue. So as not to scare his son with the horrors they now face, Guido tells him it’s a game and they can win a tank, which they do but at what cost

Linda McMahon - education secretary. What next? Undertaker minister for the undead? Haku replacing the US armed forces?

Day Five - Persian Lessons (2020) - Gilles, a young Jewish man agrees to teach the deputy commandant of a concentration camp to speak Persian so he can open a restaurant in Tehran after the war. The only problem is Gilles does not speak Persian. Another film with a breathtakingly poignant ending.

Day Four - Duck Soup (1933) - the politically unstable country of Freedonia is made even more chaotic by the installation of Rufus T Firefly as leader. Neighbouring Sylvania sends two spies to infiltrate the government, resulting in war! ‘All God’s chillun’ got guns, indeed!

You don’t see arch-Brexiteer Clarkson thumping this particular tub do you?
As much of the media accuse Labour of destroying British farming, it’s always good to pull back and look at the bigger picture 👀
Brexit is imposed, costing UK farmers £850m a year.

UK Farmers: Silence.

A trade deal with Australia gives their farmers near tariff-free access to UK markets.

UK Farmers: Tumbleweeds.

Just 1.6% of farmers will pay half the rate of IHT on any land over £3m to fund the NHS.

UK Farmers ...

Day three - Green For Danger - 1946. A murderer is at large in a wartime hospital but can Inspector Cockrill catch the culprit before they kill again?
November 17, 2024 at 9:23 AM
Day Two - Angels With Dirty Faces (1938) - superior gangster movie with outstanding performances from all the leading actors, as career criminal Rocky Sullivan becomes an unlikely mentor for a bunch of juvenile delinquents. Another tearjerker ending as we are left wondering- was he really a coward?

Day One - Cinema Paradiso (1988). Glorious homage to the golden era of film, as seen through a child’s journey into adulthood in Sicily. The closing montage, scored beautifully, as is the whole soundtrack, by Ennio Morricone, would bring a tear to the coldest heart.

As this platform is inherently nicer than the rat-infested hell-hole that is X, I thought I would share something ‘nice’. For the next ten days I will list my ten favourite films and brief reasons why I like them. If anybody else fancies doing the same, go for it

At the risk of leaving myself open to accusations of hyperbole, I’ve only been on here an hour or so and already it’s at least a trillion times better than X.
