Nothing changed my relationship with New England winters more than the realization that if it was cold and I wanted to walk or run or hike or bike I could just keep putting on more clothes until I wasn’t cold.

Today’s bike commute through Medford, Somerville, Cambridge, and Boston was enough to finally make me pick up a pair of studded tires. Looking at the Schwalbe Marathon Winter Plus.

“HEY MAN YOU LOOK COZY” is the nicest thing anyone has ever yelled at me while I’m riding a bike.
January 22, 2025 at 1:04 AM
I wish I had a copy of this printed out when a driver nearly smoked me with a right hook, then stopped, got out of the car, and started yelling at me for "breaking the law" by...riding a bike in a lane designed for riding bikes.

I kindly encouraged them to research the law as I continued on my way.
They couldn't resist scolding cyclists for running red lights and stop signs, but that aside, this is a helpful guide for drivers. All of this should be obvious and common sense, but we know it's not.

Submitted a slew of bike safety concerns in Medford, Somerville, and Cambridge at www.bostonmpovisionzero.org as part of the outreach for the Boston Region Vision Zero Action Plan. Fingers crossed that something comes of it. A huge thanks to @cambbikesafety.bsky.social for flagging.

Any other winter hikers on here? Mount Field and Mount Tom were an absolutely frigid winter wonderland last weekend.

No doubt that many break the rules, but the article does explain the focus on driver safety over cyclists and pedestrians:

"And a big reminder to drivers: It is still far more dangerous to navigate the streets of Boston on a bike than as a driver. (Think 4,000 pounds of steel versus a person.)"
Valid commentary below. At the same time, if all Boston cyclists would just follow their own rules of the road as well, street safety would improve dramatically for all.
Truer words have never been spoke:

"While it may be tempting for drivers to speed up to pass a bicyclist, often it’s safer to just stay back, Mook said. 'Chances are you’re probably just going to end up at the stoplight at the same time,' he noted."

We live in the most technologically advanced society in human history and we have used it to turn the door of a microwave into a television that can show people more ads. www.theverge.com/2024/12/30/2...

Managed to squeeze in 15 miles on the Somerville Community Path with the bike trailer today to make it past 1,000 miles for 2024.

Did not consider the position of my mudguards when using a bike trailer and just sprayed my toddler head to toe in mud. Live and learn.

A little snow on the bike earlier while donating blood before a (very short, safe, easy) ride home.

If your doc offered you a med that ✨ halved ✨ your risk of early death, it would be an absolute no-brainer to take that treatment.

Avoiding sedentary commuting is exactly that, and it costs a heck of a lot less than most US healthcare options.

I hate this spot where Mass Ave meets Garden St heading into Harvard Square after the Common. They just repainted the lines but didn’t make the bus lane large enough for a bus. Even when someone parks touching the curb it still forces bikes into traffic.

If you think traffic is bad, be glad all the bike riders, walkers, and transit users aren't also driving with you. In Metro Boston, non-car transportation modes account for 20%. Imagine increasing Cars on the road by 25% if we all shifted to driving. Thank a bike lane, thank a bus rider.
The more people that choose to walk, bike and ride public transit to get around cities, the better cities work for EVERYONE, including DRIVERS. There’s no “war on cars,” just an opportunity for more successful cities.

It’s time we tell #TheTruthAboutTraffic.

Working in something new. Stay tuned.

A little wet but overall nice bike ride this morning. Very little slush or ice on the parts of Somerville and Cambridge that I went through and much warmer than expected.

I have these Pogie Lites from BIKEIOWA that I really like. They aren't neoprene like the Bar Mitts so I still use a light glove underneath, but actually prefer that since I can vary the gloves I use depending on the weather. bikeiowa.store/collections/...

Also the first commute where I forgot to pack khakis for the office so thank God I was biking in wearing hiking pants instead of tights.

First below-freezing bike commute of the season this year in Boston, and of course I was so worried about being cold I put on too many layers and ended up roasting.

I have Rad Power brand on my Rad electric cargo bikes. Those are a hassle to get on and off (require a screw).

Making the switch to pogies for my bike commute this winter. Any recommendations? My bike has to live outside so prioritizing ease of putting on and taking off. Hoping one of the cold-weather members of #bikesky like @lauragmitchell.com or @gravelinfluencer.bsky.social or others have some thoughts!
