The actual secret to why I know stuff is that I ask a question any time I don’t understand literally anything. I don’t care how simple it is. Anybody who makes fun of you for asking a simple question likely doesn’t know the answer either

today I was poking around wikipedia, as I do, and I learned that in 2024 the protection settings for "Francium" were changed due to persistent vandalism by francium-haters and for some reason this tickles me pink. humans will get upset about anything

was talking about this with a fellow expat friend. here, mostly, we get paid less, but the quality of our lives is higher, for so many reasons, this one among them. (you will not get paid less if you are not working a traditional white collar office profession, on top of that)
Also someone needs to explain to, not just Rappoport (who is an idiot), but a lot of other people too, that the premise of democratic socialism is not that everyone is poor but that everyone can have nice things and afford an occasional date night out
i don't get it. omen sushi in nyc is cheaper than nobu in malibu, where you dined last year without your wife

from the "no shit" department, but it's interesting to see an article about it in a US publication

Mamdani’s Ideas Have Been Tried Before — and Worked
Politicians on both the right and the left have used urban subsidies to rise to power in countries around the world.

This reminds me of the protests just before the Iraq war in 2003 (which I went to)

Unfortunately we know what happened next

This is a good start but it can't be where it stops

I can't decide if this place is actually devoid of the content/interactions I want to pursue or if I'm just not finding it. I don't want to say bsky is dead because I know it's not, there are posts with tons of interactions on here and I see them every day. but maybe it is for what I want

today I learned that the US govt charges you $2350 to renounce your US citizenship and I'm not saying the US has enslaved me or anything but paying for my freedom does feel f'in weird

won't have to worry about this for awhile as I still have several years to go before I can naturalize here but man

I have a special power where women feel so comfortable around me they go to sleep while hanging out with me and I wonder if this is related to being a night owl. 20,000 years ago I was the guy on watch while the tribe was sleeping, it makes sense that my presence at night would let them sleep

every so often I marvel that the entire world is being dominated by a guy who ran for president on a lark to improve his visibility for his businesses

was taking oxycodon for the pain of my foot wound, recently decided to stop because the wound is (finally, after months and a surgery / hospital stay) getting better, and let me tell you kids, opiate withdrawal is a real thing. I haven't slept in days and I got really depressed somewhere in there

"dubai chocolate" is a masterclass in marketing. to me it tastes a lot like a whatchamacallit or a nestle crunch. maybe I just don't have the kind of fine, distinguishing palate you need to enjoy it. or maybe the lindt version is not that great. or maybe I shouldn't buy from grocery store endcaps.

why must people shorten words by like, three letters, to turn something that was recognizable english into something that other people have to use internet search for. "what the f is skong," I say to myself as I read a post that cryptically states "skong good". tap tap tap into the search engine

this is a tough headline for me. one the one hand it's obviously bad in the medium to long term if there aren't entry-level positions for them to enter (this applies to the US, not as bad in Germany b/c job training here is v good and adjusts w/ time).
on the other hand fewer mid mgmt is a huge good

These are two countries moving in opposite directions. Germany, facing a labor shortage in the next two decades, is working hard to remedy it now. The US is busily reducing the size of its labor force, skilled and unskilled both, as quickly as possible. We'll see which approach is smarter.

I stopped my bg3 playthrough one long day of playtime from the end because I got hooked on a gacha dungeon crawler mobile game (wizardry variants daphne). I feel like I should be more ashamed of this than I am. but somehow the game is really good! One of the best pure dungeon crawlers I have played

I have a freezer for the first time in years and recently discovered the frozen foods section at my local edeka, subsiding solely on Kartoffelpuffer and Eier today

axios wrote a thing recently about how they (axios) is so obsessed with AI partially because "wealthy CEOs are spending billions on it" and I deeply hope that "AI" crashes and burns as it should and the people at axios learn decisively that people who have tons of money can indeed be stupid f'ks

pretty much says everything you need to know about the US that the very wealthy would rather back a corrupt sexual harasser than bring themselves to vote for mamdani, or even abstain from the election

I have to say, I get major schadenfreude watching the US shoot itself in the foot in ways like these. I don't want it to dominate the world. I don't want governments to imitate it, or people to admire it. I want it to decline and fall, and for everyone to look at it as a cautionary tale forever

today for the first time ever I used the awl on the swiss army knife I have owned for something like twenty years to poke new holes in the leather straps in my sandals. and it worked beautifully.

did I know that it was an awl? no. do I look like I would know if something was an awl? I think it was!

tom hanks is who (some) americans want to represent america and its spirit better

trump and vance are the ones that actually represent america and its spirit better

sorry, I don't make the rules. the country voted for trump and vance to rule them. trump was voted in twice. tom hanks, 0 times.

my dad loves to do this, and I always respond with, "I'm not trying to convince you of anything, I don't care what you think, I'm trying to get you to stop talking about this subject"

it has the virtue of being 100% true, I only get irritated when we veer into exactly this territory
The people who tell us that we have to be nicer and less condescending in order to persuade people are tell us that in the most wildly unpleasant and condescending way.
Nate Silver just wrote a really long thing about how disappointed he is in all of you

Hell, even I don't do that

I haven't been single for long, but I can confidently say the worst part of it so far is not having anyone to come visit me in the hospital when I'm here for an extended stay. I don't have any good friends in Munich, or a real support network. It's just me. And I'm lonely and sad in this hospital.

welcome to grasbrunn. ironically, I have moved from living in an actual office to living in an apartment that was converted from an office (the building still has some businesses in it). still, I have things like a kitchen, shower, freezer, and washer-dryer now. and the place is cute!
