Welcome to pianist Garrick Ohlsson's official Bluesky Page!
The Chopin Competition has begun. Here I am in Warsaw with my marvelous colleague Yulianna Avdeeva at the inaugural concert on October 2, where we played Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos. And now the hard work of serious listening begins.

Throwback to my conversation with Keitaro Harada before last weekend’s Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No.2 w/ the Dayton Philharmonic.

A joy to revisit this concerto and celebrate his first season as Music & Artistic Director. Congratulations Keitaro, on this milestone!

In the world of art and music, there are certain works that are perfect — and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 is one of them.

I’ll perform it with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra on Sept 19 and 20.

Christoph von Dohnányi was an unusually generous, always inspiring colleague. I was fortunate to perform Bartók, Busoni & more with him.

I first heard Dvořák’s Piano Concerto in Prague, where I’ve played nearly 100 times. I fell for František Maxián’s recording under Václav Talich.

Later I had the honor to tour and record it with the Czech Philharmonic and Jiří Bělohlávek.

As the season ends, I’m grateful.

Highlights included performances with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic, and the Cleveland and Philadelphia Orchestras. Recitals in the US and abroad let me share the piano in its most personal form.

I look forward to next season.

“…a thundering ovation…Ohlsson produced an intermittent sense of cool sophistication amid the lyricism.”

Performing with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Ravinia and connecting with such a warm audience was a true highlight. Grateful for an inspiring evening of music.

My shirt reads “Tanglewood” but here I am with Maestro Louis Langrée at the Ravinia Festival after our Chicago Symphony Orchestra rehearsal for Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 22. Yes, it was a hot day!

I was delighted to play for the first time with Teddy Abrams last Sunday at Caramoor, with the Orchestra of St. Luke's. Teddy is a musician after my own heart, and a super human being as well.

Recording Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 27 with The Cleveland Orchestra and Franz Welser-Möst was a real pleasure—it was deeply rewarding to explore its lyricism together.

What do Chopin, Handel, and Sousa have in common?

I spoke with Ben Laude on The Chopin Podcast about this unexpected connection—and how composers from different eras often have more in common than one might think.

An early Caramoor memory: stepping in on short notice to play Mozart’s Piano Concerto in B-flat and “Ch’io mi scordi di te” with Jessye Norman.

I’m pleased to return on Aug 3 to perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s.

I love giving concerts, and doing some teaching—especially through my work with ToneBase Piano, where I share key ideas on playing. A key one: after striking and sustaining a note, more than 2 oz. of pressure isn’t needed. It can hinder moving to the next note. Piano is applied movement—like dance.

It’s impossible to recreate the excitement, the hubbub, and the exhaustion of winning the 1970 Chopin Competition—interviews, extra performances, and filming prizewinners playing etudes. The crew captured it here in Opus 10 #1.
