What would your life be like if you were completely aware of the Father’s deep awareness of and pleasure with you throughout all of your waking hours?

~ Curt Thompson in Anatomy of the Soul
…the only resource for Christians to resist the ideological distortions of our faith— distortions all the more tempting because to be ‘self-servingly dramatic’ seems a better alternative than to be boring-is our faith in the God to whom Christ prays on the cross.

Hesitant to stir the pot on empathy, since it’s a verbum non gratum for some, but it’s significant that Worthington’s data shows that people are unlikely, possibly unable, to forgive wrongs without feeling empathy for the perpetrator.

Loving these lines from G. M. Hopkins’ poem God’s Grandeur. Beautiful reminder that the dawn always comes after the dark.

Struck by this from Dallas Willard today:

“Western culture is, largely unbeknown to itself, a culture of rejection. This is one of the irresistible effects of what is called “modernity,” and it deeply affects the concrete forms Christian institutions take in our time.

I want to sit with this idea for a while.
It comes from one of @malcolmguite.bsky.social‘s poetic meditations in Word in the Wilderness, a lovely volume guiding my heart through Lent:

“Most of us are under pressure, external and internal, to do everything, be good at everything…

O Lord of the nations, your ways are hidden. Human history contains such suffering, so many evils. Yet great historians have acknowledged the extraordinary staying power of American democracy thus far. We look to you for leaders to emerge in our time of desperate need.

Two “random” things that came to me this morning:

1) Romans 13 in my reading. 😬
Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established…

Paul goes on. Keep reading.

This is Winston Churchill visiting the White House during World War II.

Funny how he isn’t wearing a suit either. Almost like he was a wartime leader defending his country from being slaughtered and wiped out by an authoritarian aggressor.

A Morning Prayer:

O Lord, you who establish the work of my hands, go before me this day, I pray, be above me, below me and behind me, be my guide and my guardian, so that I may fulfill your good purposes for me this day. I pray this in the name of the Guardian of my soul. Amen.

On one hand, Iranian Christians being deported at risk of their lives.

On the other, what appears to be US government influence leading to a notoriously violent, misogynistic alleged human trafficker coming back to the US from Romania.

The liberated Hebrew slaves were instructed to create a fragrant oil that would give their traveling place of worship a particular scent.

They were forbidden from replicating that fragrance in common life.

The point was sensory—they could smell and know, “This is where the presence of God is.” 1/2

"We grow toward Christlikeness only as we become more caring. A noncaring Christ-follower is a contradiction in terms. However, we cannot show real concern, especially for those in pain, unless we first take time to listen. We can only love those to whom we genuinely listen."

Exploitation of the vulnerable person tells us about the exploiter, not the victim of that exploitation, and is always an abuse of power.
