'Herbarium' relates a happier story. Zimmerlinde, or Room Lime, was a popular indoor plant in early 20C Vienna, grown for its large felty leaves (as we will see this is not its complete potential). All Lucien Freud's plants are descendants of his uncle Sigmund's plants in Vienna.

Thanks to the fascinating book, 'Lucian Freud: Herbarium' (Giovanni Aloi, Prestel), I now know that zimmerlinde is Sparrmannia africana, erstwhile African hemp. I bought a plant this year, but I lost it through accidental waterlogging. (Someone will say that nothing is accidental.)
