You’re absolutely correct that delays in the court system are a major problem that should be addressed. Cutting the right to a jury trial is not a good way to address those delays.

Yes BBC resources are squeezed, but if an ordinary person knows something that a journalist specialising that area does not know it is not an issue of resources.

Assuming your original post was an argument against the idea of introducing ID cards in the UK, does this not undermine your point? You’re saying they didn’t have actual “identity cards”, merely government records (which our government already has in far greater quantity and quality).

How about:

“Because they clearly think that, despite other countries being far easier to get to and offering greater benefits, that the UK is the best country in the world. You don’t agree?”

As a nation, we should be more proud of the number of refugees that choose Britain in their darkest hour.

Hi from the UK 👋 Have never understood why hand counting is absurd. Lot of votes, yes, but also a lot of people to count them. In the case of the Presidential election they don’t take office for two months, so it’s not like there’s a rush. Presumably US elections pre-date counting machines, so… 🤷‍♂️

It may be that the Trump presidency reminds people of the dangers of untrammelled power - but that's only going to happen if politicians, journalists & opinion formers actively make that case.

If we keep pretending the problem is that there are *too many* constraints on govt, we really are doomed.
