Despair, like it's further pushing how not only have you lost your life, and now you're left to face what comes next, but you also failed to find and save your sister, potentially dooming her to the same fate or something even worse.

I do still find the scream a bit goofy, but it's got the descriptions of how you die, and I like the silence and image of Del being dead or unconscious, depending on what took him out (though some just do a small description within the game and go right to the game over screen itself)-

being a still image of Death, without any text or anything, I think is cool.

There's also a lot of unique ways to die here (my favorites being the troll death and the slime death), and I can't recommend enough to check out the numerous videos on them if you're interested (and that's something that applies to all these games, whether Shadowgate specifically or Macventure.)
