Jacinthe stepped back and studied him up and down. He wasn’t her usual fare—far too skinny, some might even say gaunt due to his height. His cheeks were sunken, and the black leather of his jacket was worn and cracking at the joints. The only thing that seemed new was his haircut, recently shaved on the sides to leave only a lock of green in the center. His pants were ripped in what she had assumed was a fashion statement, but now she couldn’t be certain if he was living rough. Had he come expecting a payday if he won? In a way it could be; tickets to the S. S. Anne were a hot commodity on the scalper’s market. Jacinthe sat down alongside Lebaron, who scrambled as far away from her as he could with the handcuff still locked. “Monsieur Lebaron, I will be quite frank with you. You are crass, ungentlemanly, crude, ill-bred, bedraggled, coarse, libertine, foolhardy and brash. If I were to take you on as our in-battle verbal agreement dictated, I would need to almost completely decimate you in order to make a presentable aristocrat out of you. It would be an arduous undertaking, and you would not be yourself by the end of it. That is not an enterprise I would venture into lightly.” “Yeah, well. I’m nothing to write home about as it is.” He grimaced. Jacinthe’s first impression was that he was upset with her assessment, but there was something in his eyes: a sadness so striking that it swayed her deeply. His concept of self was so tarnished, so sullied by a lifetime of being kicked while down, that he truly resented himself. Something stung him each time he looked into the mirror, some deep pain roiled unaddressed under his skin that neither drinking nor fighting nor drugs couldn’t settle. A lifetime of fighting against himself, the world, the perceptions cast upon him due to how he looked.
