Known for his unforgiving and often critical depictions of German society during the Weimar Republic, this self-portrait by Otto Dix (1912) pays homage to the work of the Italian Old Masters - the carnation was a popular motif in northern Italian Renaissance painting.

A beautiful self-portrait by the Scottish artist David Wilkie painted in 1805 when he was 20 years of age and in the same year as he set out from Edinburgh to London. He was later appointed Principal Painter in Ordinary to both King William IV and Queen Victoria.

Just a pretty picture of some of my favorite "large" paint brushes, as a little creative warm-up. I say large, but I need to be brave and go bigger still, sometime in the future. Being an illustrator for decades has honed my love for a simple line, so it's hard to let go and be bold sometimes. 🤪🎨💚

Christian Franzen is recalled as one of the most outstanding photojournalists of his time and was particularly active in Madrid from the mid-1890s. In this portrait from 1903, Sorolla has used a deliberately restrained palette to create a painting of simplicity and elegance.

Medieval saint with her emotional support dragon?

This 1500s artwork shows St. Margaret of Antioch, who legendarily escaped a dragon (aka the devil) with the power of faith

From a richly illustrated Book of Hours—because medieval saints did it with style.

A Line Is The Main Protagonist : Paul Klee’s Black and White Lithographies

For German-Swiss artist Paul Klee the line is “a dot that went for a walk, part of a concept of the infinite as cosmic/earthly tension”.

I'm currently working on an illustration inspired by artist Mabz Brisson (aka chalkedbymabz - not sure she's here) via #workshopweek2025 but forgot to get a shot of the pencil lines. You can still see them under the ink! Next step, tiny detail lines. This might become a watercolor, we'll see.
