Neither of them are digressive in the same way, but they come at memoir at an off-kilter angle.

Not similar but I guess similar audacity might be Gertrude Stein’s The Autobiography of Alice B Toklas, and also Nabokov’s Speak, Memory (where he appears as a made-up poet).

He's doing the sensible thing.
