I think I need a break from helping my teen review for the state Algebra 1 test and grading world history papers.

Last night I dreamed I was taking a math test with the following problem: Rationalize the radical in the denominator.

Wow! 7+ years...so I've chosen MIDDLE for today's (final😢) #FridayKiss. From an unpublished marriage of (in)convenience in 14th-century France.
Bernat turned his back on the window and surveyed the bedchamber in the moonlight. The bed drew his gaze. Just to lie down for a moment someplace soft and comfortable. He’d sleep on the floor of course but a few minutes rest on the bed would do no harm. Then he saw Leona in the middle of the bed. She was asleep. And naked. Naked. Hair left unbound. She’d bathed. He stepped closer and looked down at his bride. No, not his bride. Just a woman who needed his help for the moment. Except she’d prepared herself for her husband. And he was not—could not be—her husband. He had no rights in this bedroom and wouldn’t take what she meant to offer to a husband. He would not abuse any woman’s trust in such a way.

I mean, ‘there are twelve men down in the cellar’, but Alex poisoned them.” He said it so matter-of-factly that I could only gape at him. Then he hooted. “Jesus, you thought I was serious for a minute.” “Of course not.” He tickled my knees. “You did. Admit it.” “No.” I slapped at his hands while giggling. My knees were super ticklish. “Who are you and what have you done with Jonathan Bradford’s body?” “It’s in the cellar with the others. Alex wanted a baker’s dozen.” He was laughing so hard he could barely get the words out. “To match his jersey number. For luck.” I pushed away. “If you’re going to be like that, I’ll just go over there.” “Don’t do that. I won’t touch your knees anymore.” He lifted his hands in surrender…until he grinned. “Unless you ask me very nicely.”

Any minute now you’ll offer to save my reputation after compromising me.” “Compromised you, have I?” His lips brushed over mine. “Thoroughly ruined me.” “As long as it’s for every other man out there.” My lips parted on a soft gasp. “You can’t just say things like that.” He nuzzled my neck. “Why not? It’s true. Anyway. What comes next is entirely up to us.” “That easy?” I doubted it. “Are you planning to have your brothers-in-law call me out to force a shotgun wedding?” I choked on a laugh. “God, no.” “Good thing. I’m a lousy shot, and I’d hate to shoot one of them when I tried to—what was that thing you called it where the guy shoots in the air?” “Delope?”

I took a bite of the mac. “And I would have definitely missed this.” The deliciousness made me sigh with pleasure. His eyes went hot. “Is that the sound you make when—” “Shh. You can’t talk about that here. It’s a school.” “You sound like a school marm. I don’t know why it’s a turn on, but it is.” “Stop.” “Yes, ma’am.”

1st printing of Shirlee Busbee's _Gypsy Lady_ (1977). Cover shows a young woman with long, flowing black hair, a long and full red dress that sits off the shoulder and shows a hint of cleavage with a black, laced belt (? my grandma would call it a girdle or short corset), and several bracelets--it's a pretty stereotyped image of a 'gypsy' that draws on sexualized views of 'gypsy' women. Behind her left shoulder is a 'gentleman', identified as such by his jacket and snowy cravat, who is standing with crossed arms and staring at the young woman from the shadows and looks a bit predatory. Over her right shoulder is another man, who has facial hair, a scarf over his heads, etc., and is also clearly meant to look like a 'gypsy'.

This weeks's #FridayKiss is FUTURE, and I actually have something! From the hockey-mom manuscript I'm currently revising.
Then the man himself appeared. His sweet, crooked smile went straight to my heart. It was impossible not to fall for this man. I knew because I’d gone and done that. Fallen for him and his son. I’d allowed myself to daydream about someday maybe blending our families, making our own. It had been years since I’d let myself imagine that kind of future, years since I’d even wanted to imagine it, but Jonathan…well, he had me thinking about it.

Well, that's annoying. If you've already set it to full mark-up, try opening the reviewing pane to get the side panel that will show all changes and stats (number of deletions, comments, etc.). It's also searchable. When I delete anchor text, the comment is still in the reviewing pane.

Gabe shifted, and I got a better look at his tattoo: a faceless woman, clearly Greek-inspired, with masses of hair swirling around his arm. The edges of her face were words. “That’s fantastic.” I peered closer. “Marlowe.” His gaze warmed fractionally. “Yes.” To Madeline, I said, “‘The face that launched a thousand ships’ quote. Why is she faceless?” “Because no one knows what she looked like?” Bullshit. “Right. Try again. Why is she faceless?” “Because I killed the tattoo artist before he could finish.” Jonathan appeared at my side. “Don’t frighten my guest, Gabe.” “Oh, he doesn’t frighten me.” Much. Gabe crossed his arms, his arms straining the fabric of his t-shirt. “No?” “I teach high school.”

Today's #FridayKiss is WAIT. Apparently I used 'wait' a lot in my WIP, so here's a snippet for every teacher who's ever had to explain how they know a student didn't write their own essay.
Ms. Bennett shifted the papers and pointed to a line. “Read that please.” I glanced at it and shrugged. “Does it sound like AJ?” “What do you mean?” She leaned forward, and the scent of lilies teased me. Focus. I was here to talk about AJ’s English grade, not inhale the scent of his teacher. “Does AJ typically use ‘juxtapose’?” I laughed. Wait. She was serious? “I'm a lawyer and don’t use juxtapose.” She gazed at me patiently. This time I actually read the paper. Shit. I knew why we were here now. “He’ll redo it.” “No.” I opened my mouth to argue but she cut me off. “He’ll write an entirely different one with a new question.” “That’s fair.” “Here, after school, and under my supervision.” “Now just a minute; he has practice.” “Right, the D1 hockey dream.” Had she…had she rolled her eyes?
