19. In the same vein as 18, stop making fantasy maps similar to real world maps. Looking at you Maas. Ireland isn’t your fantasy world. Make your own.
20. Romance and sex are not synonymous. And a good romance doesn’t have to have sex. There’s a place for smut, but there’s a place without it too.

17. Stop switching points of view in the same sentence. I’m just going to assume you’re an idiot. Also this makes a book super confusing and hard to follow.
18. Stop using the Irish language for your fantasy world. My heritage is not your fucking fantasy world building system.

16. Not every story needs to be a thousand pages long. See number 15. Unless it gives character background, moves the plot along, or adds something to the plot of the story, please leave it out. It just slows down the story.

15. Excessively wordy. Unless it’s part of the plot, or helps move the story along, I don’t need to hear about how your character went boogie boarding when just pages before a murder happened. Like this has zero point to the story aside from bulking it up.

14. Forced romance for the sake of romance. NOT EVERY STORY NEEDS ROMANCE. Unless it’s marketed as a romance, why do we have to have a romance in every single story? Half the time it’s forced and not even organic. Just stop. Go write romances then.

13. Any type of Fan fiction. Fan fiction has a place, but I’m sorry if this is controversial, not in traditional publishing. Come up with your own damn ideas. It’s not hard. Be creative. If I have to see another Harry Potter fanfic I’m gonna scream.

12. AI. Don’t use it for any part of the writing process. Readers know. I literally just returned a book because it was glaringly written by AI. We know. It doesn’t sound natural. It’s gross. Just fucking write it yourself. Bad writing is still better than AI.

11. Cozy books can still have a plot. The last 3 books I dnfed were cozy books because they just didn’t have any plot. You have to give me more than just “atmospheric slop”

10. Not every guy needs to be dark and brooding and buff. (Read Starling House by Alix E Harrow, to get what I mean. An “ugly” character that isn’t the tropes and is still highly attractive and interesting. That’s the way to do it) let’s see some more interesting characters for looks please.

9. Lack of editing. Nothing will piss me off faster than seeing “to” when it should be “two” or the wrong there, their, they’re. This happens way too often.
October 15, 2025 at 7:39 PM
7. Repetition of a word or a couple words over and over to the point I start keeping tally. If I notice you’re using “looming” enough it stands out, it’s being used too much.
8. Using Gen z slang in fantasy books. Just don’t. Please it’s awful.

5. Tiny and frail women, where it’s mentioned a thousand times how small she is. Gag.
6. On that note, any physical feature where it’s mentioned multiple times. I read a book where the girl had rainbow hair in in less than 4 pages it was mentioned over 30 times. Like I get it, she has rainbow hair.

3. If a character is in their 30s or above, please stop having them talk and act like teenagers.
4. The huge age gaps in romance. 18 with a 400 something year old is just gross. No person who has lived that long is gonna find a teenager interesting.

2. Toxic characters. I get if it’s a villain or a character who grows over time, but if it’s a character that’s supposed to be a love interest, why are they cruel to their partner? Why are yall trying to convince a reader that the violent mmc is a good guy?

1. Stop info dumping immediately. If it takes halfway through the book to get to any action, I’m going to be bored to tears. Background information and character building can be done between action. That way we grow to know the character throughout the plot.

In uni, I didn’t have a tv at all. I had no streaming services. For years I was disconnected and the happiest I’ve ever been. When I came back to the USA and media, I really hadn’t missed much. In those years without tv I lived more than when I had it. What I’m saying is, just try it.

(2/2) it makes me want to bang my head against the wall. Not only do we need to work on more ppl reading in this country, but we clearly need to work on reading comprehension with the ones who do… because 5 characters is not “too many” and complicated is kind of the thing for mysteries.
