As demand for #CriticalMinerals rises, some (we all know who) argue we need to open even more public lands, even our most protected places, to mining.

The map highlights 123,788 mining claims within 30 miles of these protected areas, representing about 25% of all public lands mining claims nationwide. Color-coded areas indicate proximity of claims to parks: dark red (inside park), red (<10 miles), orange (10–20 miles), and yellow (20–30 miles). Gray dots represent all other active claims. Dark green areas denote National Park units, and light green areas indicate National Monuments. Dense clusters of claims are visible in California, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, and Alaska, with notable proximity to many protected areas.

The use of color in scientific visualization is steadily improving, but I still see variants of the rainbow palette more often than I’d like.

A modified jet color palette that goes from dark blue to cyan, yellow, orange, and red. There is a sharp increase in contrast from green to yellow and yellow to orange. This can lead viewers to think there is a sharp boundary where data moves through the values represented by these colors.
