I've wanted to learn the Scruggs style but my hand shape and finding a comfortable set of picks has made me put off learning it. Although it'd be really cool to know both styles.

They're for "clawhammer" banjo. It's the original method for playing banjo. (The Scruggs style with 3 picks is actually a relatively new play style in comparison. It's just way more popular today). Here's a snippet

You can tell I don't practice with these thimbles enough by how tarnished they are. I went out of my way to buy high quality brass reproductions of the ones that were commonly used for this style of playing in the past and then just using my nails instead. 🤦‍♂️

Anyway ... Stay tuned for that. I'll probably post a cover on tiktok if I can manage to play at full speed. It's hard to add a consistent thumb beat when playing 165 bpm, still manage to play all the notes clearly, while also nailing every single chord transition and voicing.

And yes... That does mean it shares the same chord progression as Despacito.

(although Despacito technically starts on the IV chord not the I. Meaning I was unable to create the cursed mashup of my dreams. Well I guess I could, but it'd be unlistenable)

It uses a I-V-iv-IV chord progression and almost all notes in its recognizable melodies can be played to the clawhammer "beat" or whatever you want to call it. Basically has to fall on 4th notes (or 8ths if playing double time is feasible).
