They're for "clawhammer" banjo. It's the original method for playing banjo. (The Scruggs style with 3 picks is actually a relatively new play style in comparison. It's just way more popular today). Here's a snippet

You can tell I don't practice with these thimbles enough by how tarnished they are. I went out of my way to buy high quality brass reproductions of the ones that were commonly used for this style of playing in the past and then just using my nails instead. 🤦♂️

I've never seen a debris ball and inflow jet so big that they can be distinguished on SITE RADAR from ~50 miles away.
