Gorgeous example of calcite reprecipitation in an C18th lime mortar. The cavities within the binder have been infilled by calcite spar fringes, interlaminated with brown micritic calcite. (viewed in ppl, fov: 1.5mm) #ThinSectionThursday
Thin section image of a lime mortar with shell aggregate. The sample has been impregnated with a blue resin prior to thin sectioning - the bright blue areas are pore/void space. There is an echinoid spine in cross section on the centre from the aggregate. The pores and cavities in the mortar show linings of calcite which alternate between discontinuous spar fringes and thin layers of darker covered micritic calcite. Due to the different phases of redeposition the fringes exhibit a laminated/stripy tecture. The voids are large which suggests the mortar has been affected by a significant degree of binder depletion and redeposition, which suggests prolonged periods of water percolation through the binder.
