American survey respondents had a particularly racialized view of masculinity while German respondents just didn’t answer any questions about race

iirc, Americans weighted self-reliance more heavily than p much all other cultures? Surely that wouldn’t have any bad effects on young men lmao

conservative notions about what culture can & can’t affect (like beliefs about women being bad at math) blow my mind

I remember going to a talk while at the Academy abt cultural conceptions of masculinity; “being attuned to the feelings of others” was masculine-coded in some cultures but not others

there was an amazing episode of unlearning economics about the idea that women just naturally gravitate towards low paying care positions because idk we’re soft and nurturing and agreeable

i loved this episode, just listened this morning

one thing i wished they covered is how much of the college attendance gap is explained by nursing school. like, nursing school is the average woman’s equivalent to becoming an electrician in terms of wages + job security

i get that every CVS is a different size and shape so the aisle setup is going to vary from place to place but holy shit some of the decisions make no sense to me

correction—some stuff is locked up but it’s the meth ingredient allergy pills and cough syrup, which, fair enough

i think most people are willing to tolerate that sort of thing since there’s a pharmacy worker RIGHT THERE but all of us have a visceral reaction to seeing soap and deodorant locked up

turns out people will buy things from your store if you don’t make it extremely difficult for them. who knew?

my local CVS does not take medicaid so I stopped going there recently, but it’s one of the few locations that hasn’t locked up anything even though it’s in a super low income area. i’m sure they deal with some shoplifting but there’s always at least 4-5 other customers in there! buying stuff!!
January 15, 2025 at 10:03 PM
isnt their whole business model (outside of the pharmacy) “stuff you never remember to put on your grocery list because it isn’t actually food”?
January 15, 2025 at 9:54 PM
like the whole point of CVS is that i don’t have to drive all the way out to the outskirts of town where the Big Ass Grocery Stores are when i need a little treat or a birthday card or dental floss
January 15, 2025 at 9:50 PM
yup. i can’t fathom the though process behind spending millions to have tons of storefronts that are usually more convenient for most people than going all the way to a grocery store, and then decide to make everything in your storefront inconvenient to actually buy
January 15, 2025 at 9:46 PM
seems like they are realizing too late that locking shit up and then shortstaffing their stores so that customers have to wait 3-4 minutes to get some shampoo is becoming Not Worth It to most customers

do they allow video essays
