🧪Sorry.. No amount of contact tracing would have stopped COVID. By the time the first cases of pneumonia were detected, the pandemic was a done deal. Presymptomatic transmission, widespread international travel, not to mention no rapid tests in late 2019-Jan 2020) made stopping it impossible.
A really damning moment was in 2020 early in the pandemic when we had a chance to stop COVID before we gave up and let millions die or suffer long-term damage local governments tried contact tracing but it horribly failed because no one trust phones because of scammers.
I've received 12 phone calls in the last 7 days. 1 was a scheduled call with my agent, 1 was the music store Sweetwater, 10 were from scammers. We've completely ceded a former primary form of communication to fraudsters.

In the past year, there was an upturn in some seasonal infections, and we hear this now again. Terms of immune debt and immune gap are mentioned. What is this?

Ein Familienmitglied hat sich gestern impfen lassen und ist heute mit Symptomen und positiven Schnelltest im Bett. Gibt es Fälle von positiven Schnelltests nach der Impfung? Ich gehe davon aus, dass die Menge an mRNA in den Schleimhäuten so kurz nach der Impfung in der Nase nicht ausreicht, oder?

Immer wieder faszinierend die kantonalen Unterschiede im Gesundheitssystem. In Zürich kann ich mich mit 30 und ohne Vorerkrankungen für 60 CHF mit dem XBB 1.5 Booster impfen lassen, auch ausserhalb der Empfehlung.
So, endlich konnte ich mir den Booster für XBB.1.5 auch holen. Nur 60 Franken am Referenzimpfzentrum in Zürich. Habe 150 CHF erwartet. 😅

Fledermäuse sind faszinierende Tiere.
Aber als Infektiologe schaudert es mich bei dem Bild etwas.
Fasst niemals ungeschützt Fledermäuse an, sie können Tollwut übertragen.
Wenn es doch passiert (z.B. Kinder), bitte umgehend zum Arzt zur Impfung, denn ohne Impfschutz verläuft Tollwut immer tödlich.
Aber als Infektiologe schaudert es mich bei dem Bild etwas.

Warum ich Drostens Aussagen zu Covid nicht nachvollziehen kann: Wenn ein Virus in der 8. Epidemiewelle innert 2 Jahren eine Krankheitslast zeitigt, die derjenigen einer schweren Influenzawelle nahekommt, sollte man jährliche oder zweijährliche Infektionen fürchten.

Warum ich Drostens Aussagen zu Covid nicht nachvollziehen kann: Wenn ein Virus in der 8. Epidemiewelle innert 2 Jahren eine Krankheitslast zeitigt, die derjenigen einer schweren Influenzawelle nahekommt, sollte man jährliche oder zweijährliche Infektionen fürchten.

Der Erfolg der mRNA-Technologie basiert auf Erkenntnissen zur Erkennung von RNA durch das angeborene Immunsystem. Chemische Modifikation der Bausteine ermöglicht den sicheren Einsatz von mRNA in Impfungen. Für diese Arbeiten erhielten Katalin Karikó & Drew Weissman den Nobelpreis 2023. Gratulation!
