If I were the victim of a crime, I would much rather receive financial compensation from the victim than just see them get locked up in prison. And making perpetrators responsible for repairing the harm they causes is much more meaningful than just making them suffer.

If perpetrators can’t pay, they can work. People do vary greatly in wealth and earning potential, so sentencing should take that into account. If the contribution is less than the payout in a case, the difference should be covered by the State.

Better yet, there should be a fund that pays out compensation, and that perpetrators pay into. This fund can be invested like any other fund.

Nevertheless, realistic beliefs have the advantage of modeling the world more accurately, which can be very useful. They attract little attention, but they are the map that guide our actions. They are a public good, and like most public goods, severely undervalued.
