I feel really sad that you've had your nationality stripped at such an early point in your development.

There is hope - it's only a steak and cheese away!

I should probably explain:

I cook every night
I've cooked for the family every night since about 1986, except when we've been on holiday or travelling.
Getting a day off cooking is a big deal, for me.

It meant a lot - she gets me xxx

We can’t get either Maketu or The Smokehouse here, but they do sell Oxford Pies Smoked Fish.

Any good?

Everyone knows it’s a mouth pie

We’re not animals

Banning shit is much easier than educating the parents and trying to get them to engage with their children, which is what they should have done if they see SM as detrimental to youth.

I only found him recently. Got a bunch queued up on the Kindle for summertime

Plus, I’ve never been a boozer - booze fucks you up.

It’s not called a depressant for no reason.

I went through a ‘motorcycle/drug bum’ phase during which I read all of Kerouac and a bunch of Ken Kesey and Tom Wolfe

I could never be as miserable as him - I’m quite happy pottering on my own, or with people. He seemed to hate people and was miserable on his own.

He’s such a great story teller.

Setting Free the Bears was my first, ostensibly because it had a motorcycle in it, but from then on I was captivated

Always remember gleefully shouting to my flatmates “Robert Muldoon is a transvestite!”

Garp is my favourite, but Cider House/Owen Meany r special

Really loved the book - read long before the film was made.

They’ve just made a 6-part TV series which I have queued up but haven’t yet watched.

Agree on Hoeg’s other work. The Quiet Girl and The Susan Effect being the two I’ve read.

I’ve never watched the series, but the books are fantastic

If Michelin were true to their roots and promoted eateries worth a drive, absofuckinglutely.

Half the Michelin-starred restaurants are in places you can’t park.

Ahem - DoW

Thank you for your attention to this matter

It’s more of a demographic thing - newlandsers are the spiritual kin to the accursed huttites

Wellington really missed a trick not fencing off and gating the motorway and thorndon quay back in the 70s

You not tried my famous lentil pie?
November 25, 2025 at 9:47 PM
The Wasp Factory is gloriously black-humoured

I happened upon it in a Lambton Quay bookshop when it came out and it blew my mind

I became a firm fan of both Iai and Iain M’s work from that point on

I was a kite flyer (still am) with an annoying younger sibling…

An opportunity lost, imo.
