This, not sour cream. Sour cream is some foreign abomination.

Travelling the world, I missed pies so much.

Unless you've been to NZ you won't know. I had people in the UK, in Scotland, in the USA all try and tell me 'Yeah, but our pies' without really grasping the level of pie-dom in NZ

Our town has 3 dedicated pie shops for <5000 people, but no restaurant.

NZ was colonised from the North Eastern Pacific, not from the West Island. It was incredibly hard to find.

The winds and currents from Oz to NZ are all wrong - it's a heck of a sail

If you want to learn more, this book is excellent, as is the radio magazine article: www.rnz.co.nz/national/pro...

We installed a 300L heat-pump hot-water tank for under $3000 and got rid of gas entirely at our property

It uses about 2000W each day to heat for our household, which is solar powered

The total payback is just over 4 years, for us, just on saving the gas supply charge of $1.70/day

Pikelets were stolen by NZ from Wales.

My Welsh co-worker was delighted when I rocked up with a basket of pikelets

I saw the article on Stuff and thought I would add: we buy a lot of fresh veg, but struggle with eating it before it turns to green slime, until we bought some of those ‘fridge keeper’ balls designed to remove Ethylene gas - now stuff lasts, crisp and fresh, for weeks

It was pretty good.

I’ve been on a bit of a rough-puff mission, lately.

The final result, and a wee apricot dessert:

At a personal level:

Winter - only two days of really low production
The 2 really high use days was us using 24 hours of free power we needed to use before they expired

We got rid of all gas appliances

Most Phaidon Press books are.

‘Mexico’ is a work of art - the jacket is made from neon-pink paper lace. I have about a dozen Phaidon cookbooks and architecture books - the Southern Cooking one is going on the list.

There’s no comparison with the antenna of US AM stations

You should see RNZ’s 100kW AM antenna

Stade Francais is a Parisian club, who have their home ground at Stade Jean-Bouin, which is where we bought it

They have a great fan store. We went to get a jersey from the store - they had no more at the mail-order warehouse. We picked up the hat at the same time.

Are you always this contrary?

I make my wife wear her rouge, blanc et bleu coq sportif hat whenever NZ plays France

She wore it to school last year and I’m not sure she’s lived it down, yet.
