"A Secret Service agent on Vice-President Cheney’s security detail told me that plot points from Tom Clancy books would occasionally wind up inspiring real-life programs. The Vice-President was a Clancy fan. A former CIA operations officer told me he’d heard a rumor that modern America's clean-cut blonde warlord, Eric Prince, paid Tom Clancy’s ghostwriter bonuses to insert plot points that matched capabilities in Blackwater’s corporate structure. The theory was, when the Vice-President would read the books and ask if the CIA or military could match a Clancy concept, the denizens of 7th floor of CIA and the E ring of the Pentagon would say no, which meant Eric Prince could say yes. Whether the story is true, which I believe it to be, is almost beyond the point: the story is out there among people in the circles Clancy wrote about, shouting Clancy’s relevance back at the world."
