Kicking off this account with a repost of me waffling on about the War in Heaven as someone who has listened to the FP audios and read This Town Will Never Let Us Go but is otherwise a relative newcomer to Faction Paradox (so, uh, grains of salt and all)
if the Time Lords are enforcers of metaphysical idealism over history (despite claims to rationalism), and the Enemy is dialectical materialism “attempting” to assert historical materialism, what are the other notable players within the War in Heaven who have a philosophy about (and potential claim to) history? My instinct is to label Lolita’s philosophy as a form of metaphysical materialism, and Faction Paradox as dialectical idealism (in a certain sense) I find Lolita’s philosophy in particular a touch difficult to place. She does very much love being vague. I’ve not read Head of State, which I know she’s in, but then again I’m not sure much could be gleamed from there considering she’s not exactly known for political honesty anyway. Still, her very much apathetic and impersonal view of the individual very much screams metaphysical materialism. The kind of nihilistic philosophy which reduces history to mud. I’m open to being corrected on this by those more knowledgeable than I. And Faction Paradox itself, those postmodernist scallywags. People love to pretend postermodernism isn’t an ideology, but a rejection of ideology is still an ideological choice. The rejection of grand narratives is, itself, a grand narrative. Saying all of history is made up is still making something up about history you guys. You need those constructions to even make sense of postmodernism in the first place. As a result, the Faction lot do so love their idealism. Symbolism, ritual, belief, pop culture, etc etc. Narrative is the important thing to them. And to much of the series, actually. I rather suppose Lawrence Miles is probably a postmodernist himself. Hell, Doctor Who is inherently postmodern in a very meaningful sense. Of course, it’s not a new take to point out the Faction is basically just a bunch of rebellious teenagers not doing much except being weird off the in corner, but nevertheless. What’s interesting is that if this is the case, it makes perfect sense to refer to all real world conflicts as reflections of the War. Hell, in a very real and meaningful sense, I am fighting a proxy war within the War merely by making this post at all. The simple act of perceiving the War is to pick a side, it’s just that most people probably don’t know which side they’re picking. if the War in Heaven became a metaphor of sorts for the War on Terror (which certainly seems to be the implication of some of Miles’ own work), then this is hardly even a particularly out-there interpretation considering America’s every action since both before and after 9/11 has consistently been in the interest of maintaining the ideological framework of liberalism. America, a fundamentally settler-colonial society which imposes its own narrative of history on the world in order to maintain the increasingly unstable system by which they profit. Hegemony is a form of history. Any threat to this narrative is a threat to America, and the single biggest threat to that narrative is not only decolonial dialectical materialist historiography, but the actions such a historiography could help motivate people to perform. The little people. Perhaps this isn’t how Miles intended it, but Faction Paradox was quicker to kill its author than Homestuck was, as the Faction is naturally wont to do, so I can’t say that’d be a compelling counterpoint anyway
