Speaking generally. It’s a known factor. But it seems to be ignored in favour of ‘one size fits all’ so that assessments can continue as they do. The idea that ‘what goes in is what comes out’ has underpinned education forever. Maybe future AI assessment will change things?

And yet still teachers are asked to justify why their pupils aren’t making improvement. The correlation suggests brain development is a key factor. But it’s never mentioned when setting year expectations.

It goes to show how much birth month affects outcomes. It suggests the (very common sense) idea that despite the same year group teaching, some children’s brains haven’t yet sufficiently developed for what they are expected to achieve in year. School accountability has to be rethought.

A quick look at teacher vacancies (mostly trusts) show they are advertising primarily for ECTs (ie cheap). More experienced teachers are less attractive to hire.

I say focus on the content first, then reading skills. People are more likely to read something they have an interest in.

Think back to being in class at school. Some pupils loved being chosen to read. Others read with anxiety and had to reread it silently after to work out what it was about. Some just couldn’t keep up. This is not a new problem.

Even if this were a problem, the real problem is oversized classes in state schools. This is partly due to spiralling costs causing cuts to staffing levels, increasing the pupils-per-teacher ratio. Most private school parents suggest (low) class sizes are important to them.
