What we're seeing in the "don't sign up for protests" discourse is what Paulo Freire described as the convert's failure to trust the knowledge of the oppressed. As the convert tries to stand in solidarity with the oppressed, they refuse to let go of a world where they were the authority by default.

I have never seen so many public servants protest the mismanagement of a government. Trumpists will point to this as proof of the deep state, but the reality is that these are professionals who are desperately trying to get the public to understand how bad things are.

The language we're using re: protests & activism has been bothering me for months & I think I've finally sorted it out in my head.
Nonviolence is not pacifism. We've been taught to conflate them bcs a "peaceful protest" is no threat, but "nonviolent civil disobedience" has brought down regimes.
