I’m getting out worked in my own yard.

This little bee was dedicated. It spent about 10 minutes on that sunflower.

A colony of the slime mold Trichia varia being infested with the fungi Polycephalomyces tomentosus. The round, brown sporangia of the Trichia is overrun with a white, fuzzy appearance & tiny white fruiting bodies.

A large cluster of sunburst lichen is exploding out of a branch, with a few more small clusters developing in the perimeter. This cluster of golden orange sunburst lichen reminds me of a full band in full swing, with the horns popping out overhead.

Western forest scorpions.

These were snoozing under some loose bark that was clinging to an ancient fallen tree.

The larger one was about 2”. The smaller one would fit in my thumbnail. 🌿

Couldn’t help but notice an aquatic theme to what I was finding today.

An intimidating growth of phlebia, looking quite close to an open shark’s mouth. I half expected it to start chewing. A beautiful growth of golden coral fungi, about the size of a head of cabbage. Bright orange egg shell slime mold beads, looking like salmon roe glistening on a stick. A cloud in the shape of a shark’s dorsal fin.

Here’s a few things I found today that are worth peeking at. 🌿

A pair of shiny parrot waxcaps from above. One cap is mostly bright green but the left third is brown. A little two-tone action. The other is completely brown. A trio of small scurfy twiglet mushrooms are encased in a spiderweb, which has captured a ton of spores making it look like an orange veil that’s protecting their gills. A large mass of wavy leafy brain fungus is protruding out the side of a fallen tree. This particular specimen is a reddish-brown color and is about the size of a head of cabbage. An adult western skink is resting next to some filaments of mycelium.

A fallen tree with many patches of rust-colored hairy curtain crust in bunches. Popping out of and consuming a few of those are vibrant clumps of golden ear fungi, with some black stone flower lichen hanging around the perimeter. Some lichen is growing freely both in front and behind of the focal duet & in the far background there are a couple more of the same duet. An amazing tube-like growth of golden ear fungi stretches towards the lens, almost looking like an eyeless orange caterpillar with its mouth wide open, waiting to be fed. It’s growing off of one of many young shelves of hairy curtain crust that adorn both sides of a small twig.

Lots of good stuff out there today, but parrot waxcaps stole the show. 🌿

A shiny, olive colored parrot waxcap that darkens to the center of the cap. Its crowned by a nice orange surprise that lights the way. A vibrant green parrot waxcap stands out against the mundane forest debris. The rim of the cap starts at a jade color but gradually deepens to a dark green at the top. A crimson colored parrot waxcap stands alone, shining against debris. The cap is a deep & vibrant red at the tip but it slowly fades into a light salmon at the rim. A short, squat and deeply green parrot waxcap mushroom. The coloration reminds me of hazel eyes with a light green baseline, brown specks at the rim of the cap and a dark green nexus.

A mustard yellow chromosera cap peeks out of a crack in a tree trunk. Undershot showing a duet of funeral bell mushrooms growing out from under a log. They are both showing some beautiful lavender and peach coloration. A baby palomino cup grows down out of a mossy overhang. This is also called pig’s ears, and it’s not just a clever name. It looks just like a tiny pig’s ear, straining to listen through the silence. A proud bolete that’s been totally consumed by bolete mold. The entire mushroom is a fuzzy, electric orange except for the center of the cap which has retained some equally fuzzy cream color with hints of blue/green.

Coral fungi in Sonoma. Some type of clavulinopsis, either golden spindles or handsome club. These tiny growths are easy to miss even though their colors are striking. 🌿

A singular bright orange coral fungi growth protrudes from the forest floor. It has developed some folding patterns and the tip progresses to a deep red color. A deeply orange lone coral fungi is growing at an angle, like a finger pointing the way. In the background is another cluster of the same fungi. A cluster of coral fungi that has partially wilted. The base is a deep yellow but the color progressively darkens to a dark, dusty red at the end of the fingers.

A small black cup fungus grows out of the forest duff. Its outer edges are wrinkly and ashy colored from dirt and decay but the inside remains a deep black. A side angle showing the wrinkly edges. It looks almost like crumpled black leather.

Point Reyes National Seashore 🌿

A pair of tiny scarlet cup mushrooms growing off of a twig, with a third baby sprout to their right. These start off white at the base and shade all the way to deep red, with the inside of the cup being the darkest part. White finger-like growths of stag’s horn fungus beginning to emerge from the forest floor. A lone young cherry red waxcap mushroom that just emerged. The deep yellow stipe and bright red cap provide a striking contrast to the dull forest floor debris. A tight cluster of over a dozen yellowish sulfur tuft mushrooms bursting out the side of a rotten log. In the lower background a bunch more are fighting their way out from the depths.

A beautiful specimen of coral tooth fungus growing on the underside of a fallen tree. A pair of snowy waxcap mushrooms sprouting from the forest floor. The one on the right has a wild mutation that makes it look almost like radicchio. I believe this is an example of rosecomb mutation but I’m not 100% certain. I welcome correction or confirmation on this one. A developing jelly tree ear mushroom growing out of a log. It resembles a failed bubblegum bubble. A small but striking cluster of scarlet hood mushrooms. The caps show an array of deep orange to crimson. Beautiful contrast to the woody background.

It was a western jack-o’-lantern show out there today. All different shapes and sizes came to the party, young and old.

One was dressed up like a pretzel. 🌿
