Since the snow I’ve put my Christmas present to myself to good use. I’ve a bird-feeder outside the office window. Today it was replenished with lots of different treats.

If you’re not allowed to tell lies in court, nor as a part of a criminal investigation, with facing charges of perjury or contempt, why is it so hard to devise a law that our politicians are not allowed to lie to us?

Today, I made a statement in the Chamber of the House of Commons following the recent death of Sir Patrick Duffy. Aged 105, he was the oldest living former MP and the last Second World War veteran to have served in Parliament.

Today's the feast of St Andrew, Apostle, transferred from yesterday because it was Advent Sunday. Here he is with his saltire cross on the late medieval screen at Belaugh, Norfolk. He's the patron saint of Scotland, where today is a bank holiday.

Love old churches . . . St Mary and St Finnan's Catholic Church, Glenfinnan, Highlands, Scotland. It's situated near the site where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard in 1745.

O God, who are rich in mercy and who willed that the blessed John Paul II
should preside as Pope over your universal Church,
grant, we pray, that instructed by his teaching, we may open our hearts
